I just got some really nice sipo (Entandrophragma utile) sets with unique figure listed. Sipo, also called Utile, is in the same genus as sapele. They look and behave very similarly, though these are a little lighter in weight and the tangential/radial shrinkage rate is a little closer to genuine mahogany. Stew-Mac is selling sipo for necks as a mahogany substitute with good results. http://www.exotic-lutherie-woods.com/co ... -sets/sipo I also added some nice ziricote sets too: http://www.exotic-lutherie-woods.com/co ... s/ziricote I though some folks would be interested. Enjoy! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Wow, James, that Ziricote is outstanding! I recently picked up a set of what was sold to me as Honduran Mahogany that looks a lot like your Sipo. Sort of a plum pudding type figure. Here's a shot. ![]() Could this be Honduran, or is it definitely Sipo? Ken Jones Mountain Song Guitars |

Hi Ken, it's tough to tell from a small picture, but it certainly could be Honduran. The color of Honduran is usually more salmon/orange colored, while sipo and sapele are a little darker and more reddish. Also they will generally be heavier than Honduran and be closer grained, especially the kind of Honduran available today. Sapele has a great unique smell too; sipo as well but much fainter in my experience. I hope this helps... |

Alex, it's a gif animation. Google "making a .gif' or similar and you should get lots of info. |

Dang! That Sipo looks amazing, just what I like. I made a guitar recently out of some Honduran that was similar but not nearly as figured. I love the look. When the swap comes around maybe I'll make a few bucks that will come your way- |
